Every breakpoint of the waveform carries its own chaotic oscillator, and every oscillator is tethered to a fixed shape. The waveform is therefore never drawn twice the same way, and never leaves the neighbourhood of the shape it was given. The segment durations are driven the same way, so the period breathes as well.
The two dials are ampStiff and durStiff.
At 1 the tether is complete: the waveform is exactly the template and the period is
exactly constant, which is a waveform chosen rather than found. At 0 the tether is
released and each breakpoint follows its own kicked rotor. ampKick and
durKick set how hard those rotors are driven, and above roughly 1 they
are chaotic rather than merely irregular.
Start with the gain low.
Reading the panels. The top panel is one cycle of the waveform: the breakpoints as they currently stand against the template they are tethered to. The middle panel is the state of the rotors themselves, one dot per breakpoint, angle across and momentum up; a tight band is periodic motion and a filled band is chaos. The bottom panel is the audio.
templateType 0–4 is sine, saw, triangle, square, flat.
Flat removes the attractor, so at any stiffness the walk has nothing to return to.
centerDur sets the rate the durations are tethered to, between
minFreq and maxFreq control points per second, multiplied by
knum to give the cycle its pitch. refGain fades in the
untethered reference traversal, which the unit emits on its second output, so the
template can be heard next to the walk.
